Our Board

our 2023-2024 EXECUTIVE Board

president

Victor Becerra (he/they)

Biological Sciences and Philosophy

Hey there! I am someone who tends to be excited just about any kind of topic. I enjoy working but I like my occasional night out. My main interests revolve around working on public health research and providing people with access to healthcare. I plan in the future to become a physician and an advocate for policy that impacts for the better the health of those underserved in the community.

Why I chose to join Flying Samaritans?

Flying Samaritans provided a well needed niche within the UCI pre-health community. It provided an opportunity to learn and participate in multiple fields of health care from public health to dental while allowing us to experiencing providing medical care to the underserved community in Mexico. Working at this clinic exposes you to a variety of difficulties of what it means to provide healthcare with limited resources. The community in Mexico and the people you encounter in the organization are also some of most beautiful people you'll ever meet with much passion and care.

Vice president/ secretary

Tatum Osborne (she/her)

Ecology and Evolution Biological Sciences

Hi everyone! I am a fourth year here at UCI. I have been involved with Flying Samaritans since my second year. I started with just coming on clinic trips and then becoming an Intern, which I totally recommend! A little about me, I love riding my motorcycle and weightlifting at the ARC! Let me know if you are ever at the gym and I’ll come say hi!

Why I chose to join Flying Samaritans?

I absolutely love the community that Flying Sams creates. Being down in another country where everyone is there to learn and be a part of an amazing community generates a learning experience unlike any other. I don’t think you can get the community that we have anywhere else.

Genesis Dyson

Biological Sciences

Hi! My name is Genesis Dyson, and I am Co-Clinic Coordinator for the 2023-24 year. I am a first generation afrolatina premedical student. I have been working with Flying Samaritans since my freshman year, and I am absolutely in love with this organization and everything we do.

why i chose flying samaritans?

I have been working with Flying Samaritans at UCI since my freshman year, I myself started my own nonprofit in high school targeting underserved youth in the Dominican Republic. I fell in love with Flying Samaritans because of the mission and the fact that no other organization does what we do at the level that we do it with the love that we do it.

Public Relations

Molly Palalay (she/her)

Hi, my name is Molly and I am going to be the public relations chair for the 2023-2024 school year. I am a third-year Bio Sci major on the pre-med track with aspirations to go into medical school, but may also pursue a different career in the medical field. I am also a member of Delta Delta Delta, a sorority on campus. In my free time, I enjoy going on car rides and listening to music, trying new foods, and going on hikes. I am from Honolulu, Hawai’i so I also love being near the beach.

Why I chose to join Flying Samaritans?

I joined Flying Samaritans because the club is the only club on campus where you are able to get first-hand experience in a clinic for a small cost and make a meaningful impact on underprivileged communities in Mexico, where quality health care is not accessible. As an undergraduate, there are not many opportunities like this where you don’t need prior experience. The clinic trips taken in this club can be major stepping stones in your journey in the health field or just to make an impact on someone’s life!

Fundraising

Ashley Melgar (she/her)

Biological Sciences

Hiii! My name is Ashley Melgar and I am a first-generation college student. I am a third year Microbiology/Immunology major. I am very excited to be on board as Fundraising/Treasurer for Flying Samaritans! Apart from Flying Samaritans, I am a Peer Academic Advisor for the school of Biological Sciences. I love working with others and building new friendships! I am also involved in research studying clinical emergency medicine under the Emergency Medicine Research Associates program. My future goal is to go to Physician Assistant school and become a PA. I cannot wait to see what the future holds!

Why I chose to join Flying Samaritans?

I joined Flying Samaritans because I wanted to be a part of the help of serving the underserved population in El Testerazo, Mexico. The main reason why I want to go into the healthcare field is because I love storytelling and learning about different cultures/backgrounds and Flying Samaritans has granted me the opportunity to make so many friendships amongst the patients we serve. I have made so many fun memories at Flying Samaritans and I hope to continue growing and learning throughout my time at the club.

Michelle Avalos (she/her)

Biological Sciences

I love binging shows, boxing, and baking! I’m interested in going into the medical field after I graduate. I am currently a second year bio sci major.

Why I chose to join Flying Samaritans?

I joined flying sams because I think it is so important to help communities in dire need of medical attention, rural areas deserve the same medical attention we get in the states. Flying sams is the only club doing this which I think is what makes it stand out the most!

Community Relations

Arianna Perez (she/her)

Biological Sciences

Hello! My name is Arianna Perez and I am a first-generation Latina student aspiring be a future-PA. I am originally from Sacramento, CA but my roots come from Jalisco, Mexico and it brings me great pride to represent my country and culture. Often, I like to take part in volunteering in Santa Ana and other communities, working with kids and helping them with their studies. In my free time I love trying new hobbies such as crochet, paint, and embroidery. I also love watching movies, listening to music, and spending time with my friends and family.

Why I chose to join Flying Samaritans?

I joined Flying Samaritans because I loved the idea of being a part of something that would help the community down in Mexico. I had been looking into attending a clinic trip to check out the types of things that are done there and the moment that I did, I knew that I had to be a part of the club. I enjoy all of the things that we do during the trips and during the general meetings. I enjoy that I am able to develop my skills as a future health care professional in this setting.

Public Health

Monserrat Solis Casillas (she/her)

Biological Sciences

Hello! My name is Monserrat but everyone calls me Monse. I am a third year Biological Sciences major. I am a first-generation, Mexican-born student. Aside from Flying Sams, I am also involved in research where the main focus is antibiotic resistance genes. After college, my plan is to continue my education and become a PA. I am very excited to make new memories and friendships this year!

Why I chose to join Flying Samaritans

I joined Flying Sams because of the amazing work being done in El Testerazo, Mexico. As an aspiring healthcare professional, I believe that one of the most important issues that needs to be resolved world wide is the inaccessibility to free/affordable health care. Being part of Flying Sams allows me to be able to combat this problem even if it is on a smaller scale. The experiences acquired from going on these trips have truly been life changing!
